What age is too young or too old to start training?

Aikido is an art that can be practiced by people of all ages and gender.
However, as a general rule, it is not recommended that children commence before the age of 7.
There is no age limit after that.

How fit do I need to be in order to start training? What if I have a disability?

Anyone can train in Aikido. Training accommodates all levels of fitness and ability. Each person trains and develops at their own level and pace in a supportive and non competitive environment. Many people have overcome strong obstacles through Aiki training to lead more active, healthy and fulfilling lives.

What is the purpose of all the bowing?

There are many aspects to bowing (rei).

Sensei and students bow to each other in mutual acknowledgement, respect and gratitude. Through bowing we unify and focus the mind, body and spirit in training through the spirit of sincere intention (Makoto Ho).

Bowing creates order, harmony and unification of the whole dojo during practice and keeps training awake, alert and in the moment.

Frequent bowing frees up the hips, strengthens the legs and back and releases tension from the upper body.

Will training conflict with my religious or spiritual beliefs?

All Shin Sen Arts are centred around the unification and development of mind, body and spirit. How each individual uses and directs this in their life is their personal choice and responsibility.

Training at Shin Sen Dojo does not encroach on, interfere nor manipulate any individual’s spiritual beliefs or practices. In fact, the purpose in training at Shin Sen is to free up, strengthen, harmonise and enhance respect for ourselves and our own beliefs, while also respecting the individual values of others , whatever they may be.

Why are there no tournaments held in Aikido?

Aikido is based on dissolving conflict, contests, opponents and competition - therefore, there are no tournaments. Gradings are held regularly to challenge and determine the level and progress of each person’s unique abilities.
